I grew up in Long Beach, spending most of my childhood making mud cookies with my sister or pretending I was a Kung Fu Master. Nothing, however, was greater than my favorite hobby – drawing. I was ambitious and therefore, developed multiple styles. These ranged from closet-work to both bedroom and bathroom walls (side note for the untrained wall-artist, not all walls are created equal). I also made sure that every available book in my home was decorated with some sort of picture, since pictures are better than words. My Mom was obviously a huge fan.
I began to experiment with computers around the age of seven and was shortly thereafter introduced to a series of Applied Technology programs which I took through high school. In these classes, I began to learn HTML & CSS and picked up the habit of taking apart every website I could get my hands on. I was hooked. I picked up Photoshop 3.0 at the age of 12, which lead to creating graphics for animations by Middle School, which lead to consulting and designing student websites in High School. In college, I studied Art to expose myself to different styles and artists. During this time I was able to hone and develop my sense of taste and upon graduating I immediately applied my skills to land a job as a photo editor. I filled my spare time honing my coding skills and learning to develop prototypes and wireframes. Once I felt competent, I bet that if I picked up as many intern and freelance positions as I could handle I would either develop a sharp skill set, find a real job, or if I got lucky and worked hard, both.
Wedding.com was located in a small office below someone’s home in Newport Beach when I began interning with them. To this day, I’ve never had a bet pay as quickly. My internship quickly turned into full-time employment, and the learning became more challenging. As the sole designer, it wasn’t long before I was developing apps and platforms for the company. I spent three years with Wedding.com before I sensed that I needed a greater challenge. I found my opportunity at Big Purple Dot where I currently design and develop a SAAS platform for the Real Estate industry. Here, I have been able to achieve the goal I entered the position with, to create work used by thousands of customers looking to manage their entire businesses from my platform.
